CAT CORNER ADOPTION GUIDELINES

Please note that we adopt ONLY within our local Southeast Va. area.
The Cat Corner is an independent non-profit no-kill shelter which provides lifetime care for its resident cats and offers them for adoption to suitable homes.  We love to see our kitties adopted, but our first concern is of course the cats' welfare.  We screen potential adopters by asking them questions to determine whether they seem likely to be able to provide a good home and we help them to find a good personality match with a cat.  We evaluate whether the home seems like a stable one.  Our goal is to find each of our cats a home that provides love, care, and permanence.   We generally go by the following guidelines:

  • All adoptions must be approved by one of our Corporate Officers.
  • All residents of the potential adoptive home must come in to visit with the cat(s) being considered so that staff can be comfortable that it is a good personality match.  We encourage families to visit the cat several times before making a final decision on adopting.
  • All cats which are adopted must be kept indoors only. This helps keep your pet safe from traffic accidents, fights, diseases, parasites, and getting lost or stolen.
  • All cats which are adopted must be given adequate food, attention, and proper veterinary care.  It is important that the potential adopter is sure that they will have the time and money available to do this.  Both kittens and older cats, like people, may need unexpected or special medical care.  Also, cats are seen as "self-sufficient" but they become very attached and do not like to be alone for the majority of the time.
  • We adopt our cats into a home in the hopes that it will become their permanent one and that they will become a part of your family.  This is a commitment that you make to the animal; they learn to love you and appreciate belonging someplace, and are very sad if they have to be returned. For this reason, we try to evaluate whether potential adopters will be able to offer a stable, long-term home.
  • Those who are renting must provide written documentation indicating that they have notified their landlord that they will be getting a cat, have obtained written permission to have the cat in their apartment and have paid all associated fees.  Please be aware that having pets will usually require additional deposits and/or higher rents, and will limit the places you can choose when you move.  It is not fair to the cat to live with and love you, and then have to be returned to us because you move to somewhere that doesn't allow pets.
  • For those who are active duty military, we will need to discuss with you what will happen to the cat if you are deployed or move.
  • For those who are elderly or have chronic medical conditions, we will need to discuss with you what will happen to the cat if at some point you are no longer able to care for it.
  • For those just starting out in life, we will need to be sure that you will continue to be committed to having the cat when you change schools, careers, roommates, move, get married, have a baby, etc.
  • For those with very young children, we will need to talk with you and see them interacting with the cat so that we can be satisfied that the child/children are old enough to know and practice appropriate behavior with animals.
  • We deliver the cat to your home.  It can help them to have someone familiar bring them into a new environment, and we can help to make sure everybody's beginning to get settled in before we leave.
  • All of our cats are spayed or neutered, have been tested negative for feline AIDS and feline leukemia, and have had their shots.  To help defray the cost of these and other expenses we ask for a donation (currently $100.) when a cat is adopted.
  • If for any reason you cannot keep a cat you have adopted from us, you are required to return the cat to the Cat Corner.
ADOPTION PROCEDURES

If you are interested in adopting a Cat Corner cat, please come in and visit us and fill out an application for the particular cat you wish to adopt.  We take applications from those who are interested, and then each application is reviewed.  Our first priority is suitability and the best match between family and cat; secondarily to that, applications are considered in the order in which they were received.

Thank you for considering The Cat Corner and our cats in your search for a new friend and family member!  Please feel free to call us or stop by to ask any questions and visit with the kitties.
